A standardised tidal-stream power curve, optimised for the global resource

چکیده

Abstract Tidal-stream energy resource can be predicted deterministically, provided tidal harmonics and turbine-device characteristics are known. Many turbine designs exist, all having different (e.g. rated speed), which creates uncertainty in assessment or renewable system-design decision-making. A standardised normalised tidal-stream power-density curve was parameterised with data from 14 operational horizontal-axis turbines mean cut-in speed ?30% of speed). Applying FES2014 global (1/16° gridded resolution) up to 25 km the coast, allowed optimal assessment. Maximum yield found for ?97% maximum current (maxU) using 4 largest constituents (M2, S2, K1 O1) ?87% maxU a “high yield” scenario (highest Capacity Factor top 5% cases); little spatial variability either. Optimisation firm power gaps less than 2 h), is important problematic expensive energy-storage cases off-grid), ?56% – but due form speed. We find optimisation convergent design possible, our should help future research environmental impact

Does “Flattening the Curve” Affect Critical Care Services Delivery for COVID-19? A Global Health Perspective

During this coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) global pandemic, nations are taking bold measures to mitigate the spread of Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections in order to avoid the overwhelming its critical care facilities. While these “flattening the curve” initiatives are showing signs of impeding the potential surge in COVID-19 cases, it is not known whet...

Characteristics of the turbulence in the flow at a tidal stream power site.

This paper analyses a set of velocity time histories which were obtained at a fixed point in the bottom boundary layer of a tidal stream, 5 m from the seabed, and where the mean flow reached 2.5 m s(-1). Considering two complete tidal cycles near spring tide, the streamwise turbulence intensity during non-slack flow was found to be approximately 12-13%, varying slightly between flood and ebb ti...

Optimised resource construction for verifiable quantum computation

Recent developments have brought the possibility of achieving scalable quantum networks and quantum devices closer. From the computational point of view these emerging technologies become relevant when they are no longer classically simulatable. Hence a pressing challenge is the construction of practical methods to verify the correctness of the outcome produced by universal or non-universal qua...

Effect of tidal stream power generation on the region-wide circulation in a shallow sea

This paper quantifies the backward effect on the ocean currents caused by a tidal stream farm located in the open shallow sea. Recent studies in channels with 1-D models have indicated that the power potential is not given purely by the flux of kinetic energy, as has been commonly assumed. In this study, a 3-D ocean circulation model is used to estimate (i) practically extractable energy resour...

Standardised metrics for global surgical surveillance.

Public health surveillance relies on standardised metrics to evaluate disease burden and health system performance. Such metrics have not been developed for surgical services despite increasing volume, substantial cost, and high rates of death and disability associated with surgery. The Safe Surgery Saves Lives initiative of WHO's Patient Safety Programme has developed standardised public healt...
